What Cale Gundy Said in Resignation Statement After Saying 'Shameful' Word

Cale Gundy was a key figure in the Oklahoma Sooners college soccer program and a coach. He admitted to reading aloud something he called "shameful" and "hurtful" in front of his players.

Gundy's association with the Sooners has been going back 24 years. He was the quarterback for three seasons in 1990. He threw more than 6,000 yards and scored 35 touchdowns.

Gundy graduated in 1993 and was a graduate assistant. In 1994, Gundy moved on to coaching quarterbacks and running backs at Alabama.

Gundy, 50 years old, announced his resignation in a long statement shared to Tweet. In which he admitted that he had said a word he "should not - under any circumstances - have spoken."

"The words displayed had no connection to football. That screen displayed a word I shouldn't have spoken in any circumstances.

"The words displayed had no connection to football. That screen displayed a word I shouldn't have spoken in any circumstances.

Gundy said, "I want you to be very clear. The words that I read aloud on that screen weren't my words." It wasn't malicious, it wasn’t even deliberate.

Gundy felt that he owed it the "Sooner Nation", to be open about why he was leaving after serving so many years in his position. He concluded, "Coaching this football club truly has been my passion."
